100 T-shirts, 100 stories

The work is made from recycling 100 run event t-shirts.
Jennifer Shinkai is a runner who realised that these t-shirts are not ordinary items of clothing. They contain hopes, dreams and goals.
When runners enter a race we are showing our sense of ikigai. We believe in a better tomorrow where we can run faster, further or differently. This makes throwing them away quite hard but over time they become a mountain of waste.

Jennifer wanted to capture that energy in a series of pieces that use the run t-shirts as the raw material and the stories collected from the runners who donated them as inspiration for the theme of each work.
As a runner it is important to mix up your training, so Jennifer also uses various fibre art techniques such as macrame, weaving, and knotting.
Her aim is also to prevent waste so using as much of the t-shirt as possible as well as using found objects. How can we give these tshirts life for the next 100 years?

各種ファイバーアート（フロアマット、壁掛け）
この作品は、100枚のランニングイベント（マラソン・イベント）のTシャツをリサイクルして作られています。新開ジェニファー自身もランナーで、これらのTシャツが単なる衣類ではないことに気づいた。そこには希望や夢、目標が詰まっている。
ランナーがレースに参加するとき、ランナー一人一人は、それぞれの「生きがい」を想い描いている。ランナーはより速く、より遠くへ、より異った走りができる、より良い明日を信じている。そのため、それらの想いの詰まったTシャツを捨てることは非常に難しく、時間の経過とともにゴミの山になってしまう。
彼女は、ランTシャツを素材とし、それを寄付してくれたランナーから集めたストーリーを各作品のテーマのインスピレーションにした一連の作品で、そのエネルギーをとらえたいと考えた。ランナーとしてトレーニングを混ぜ合わせることは重要であるため、彼女はマクラメ、織り、結びといった様々なファイバー・アートのテクニックも駆使している。
また、彼女は無駄をなくすことにも強い関心を持っており、Tシャツを余すところなく使用し、日常品や廃材も有効活用している。
このTシャツを次の100年にどう生かすか？

Jennifer Shinkai is a Tokyo-based, British-born artist, executive coach, podcaster and runner. During Covid lockdown she returned to her art practice and since then she has illustrated 3 children’s books (Can Giraffes Swim?, Gus, Can Meerkats Swim?) and started to work with fibre in 2022. A Kyojima resident for 15 years, she is delighted to be showing her community project #100tshirts100stories in the Sumida Expo
新開ジェニファーは、東京を拠点に活動するイギリス生まれのアーティストで、エグゼクティブ・コーチ、ポッドキャスター、ランナーなど多方面で活躍中。コロナウィルスによるロックダウンが続く中、アート活動を再開し、3冊の絵本（『キリンは泳げるか』、『ガス』、『ミーアキャットは泳げるか』）の挿絵を担当。2022年からはファイバーを使った作品を制作。京島には15年在住しており、今回のすみだ向島EXPOで、コミュニティ・プロジェクト#100tshirts100storiesを展示できることを楽しみにしている。
