What is Sumida Mukojima Expo?
Sumida Mukojima Expo” is an immersive community-originated event that has been held every fall since FY2020 in the towns of Kyojima, Yahiro, and Bunkana in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, with the support of longtime residents, people who have moved to the area to pursue expressive activities, and others drawn by the mysterious charm of this place. The buildings and shopping streets of this town, where prewar row houses still remain, will be the stage for a month of various art exhibitions, project presentations, guerrilla events, and more.

Organizer: Yashima Hana Cultural Foundation
“Yatsushimahana” is a term derived from the names of the region, consist of Yahiro, Kyoshima, and Bunka, located in the northern part of Sumida Ward, and broadly refers to the Mukojima area. This area, which survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and escaped the Tokyo Air Raid, still retains the traditions and lifestyles of old Tokyo, with townscapes that are strongly reminiscent of the early Showa period. While the scenery is nostalgic and full of warmth, the area also faces many challenges, such as disaster reduction and real estate development trends. The foundation was established in 2023 to address these issues and pass on the lifestyle and culture of this town to the future.

The foundation considers both “hard” (land and buildings) and “soft” (lifestyle and activities) infrastructures as important local resources, and is actively developing various projects to enhance the attractiveness of the town by creating new values for them.
