イギリス出身で京島を拠点に活動するテキスタイルアーティスト兼コーチ、新開ジェニファー が、3度目の参加となる すみだ向島EXPO に登場します。出展作品 Ajisai Report Vol. 2 は「リベンジ・プロジェクト」と題し、東京スカイツリーの高さ634m にちなみ、会期中に最大634個のポンポンを制作・展示するサイトスペシフィックなインスタレーションです。使用済みのランニングウェアやスポーツウェアなどを素材とし、サステナビリティ、伝統的な手仕事、日常に宿る物語 をテーマに制作しています。会場には色彩とエネルギーが溢れ、作品は自由に手で触れて体感いただけます。

British-born, Kyojima-based textile artist and coach Jennifer Shinkai returns to Sumida Expo for the third time with Hydrangea Report Vol. 2. This “revenge project” unfolds as a site-specific installation of up to 634 pompoms—a playful nod to the 634m height of Tokyo Skytree. Working with reclaimed textiles, especially worn running and sportswear, Shinkai weaves together themes of sustainability, traditional craft, and the hidden stories in everyday objects. Expect a burst of colour and energy—and don’t hesitate to touch the textiles on display.

新開ジェニファー は、イギリス出身で東京・京島を拠点に活動するアーティスト、コーチ、ポッドキャスター、ランナーです。1999年に来日し、2008年から京島に暮らしています。
彼女の作品は、アート・スポーツ・サステナビリティを横断し、特にランニングやスポーツ大会のTシャツを素材として用います。これらのポリエステル製シャツは、個人の物語や夢、感情を宿す一方で、環境に残りやすく処分が難しいという二面性を持ちます。新開はこの「思い出と環境課題が交差する素材」を再生し、その歴史を称えると同時に新たな生命を吹き込みます。
2023年のすみだ向島EXPOでは、テキスタイルを使ったコミュニティアートプロジェクト「#100tshirts100stories」を発表。2024年には「Ajisai Report」を制作し、日常の風景や感情をテキスタイルで可視化しました。
そして2025年には、大阪・関西万博「Shin Onna」グループ展に出展するとともに、すみだ向島EXPO にも3度目の参加を果たし、東京スカイツリーの高さにちなむ**634個のポンポンを使った新作インスタレーション「Ajisai Report Vol. 2」**を展示します。
彼女の作品は、大胆な色彩と触感を通して過去の着用者のエネルギーを感じさせ、私たちが大切に保管する物の環境的・感情的なレガシーについて問いかけます。

Jennifer Shinkai is a British-born, Tokyo-based artist, coach, podcaster, and runner who has lived in Japan since 1999 and made Kyojima her home since 2008.
Her practice weaves together art, sports, and sustainability. As a passionate runner, she collects race and sporting event T-shirts—not just as memorabilia, but as materials imbued with personal stories, aspirations, and emotional resonance. These polyester shirts are environmentally persistent and hard to dispose of, yet often kept for sentimental reasons. Shinkai reclaims this vibrant material, transforming it into textile works that honour its history while giving it renewed purpose.
At Sumida Expo 2023, she presented the community textile art project #100tshirts100stories. In 2024, she created Ajisai Report, visualising everyday landscapes and emotions through textiles.
In 2025, Jennifer will exhibit at the Shin Onna group exhibition at Expo 2025 Osaka, and return to Sumida Expo for the third time with a new site-specific installation, Ajisai Report Vol. 2, featuring up to 634 pompoms—a reference to the 634m height of Tokyo Skytree.
Her work invites viewers to feel the kinetic energy of past wearers through bold colour and tactile composition, and to reflect on the environmental and emotional legacy of the things we keep.
